Former recruiter sues Google, says white and Asian candidates were 'purged'

  • A former Google employee is suing the company alleging that hiring policies hurt white and Asian male applicants

Wilberg's lawsuit targets Youtube, Google, and 25 Google employees.

"For the past several years, Google has had and implemented clear and irrefutable policies, memorialized in writing and consistently implemented in practice, of systematically discriminating in favor job applicants who are Hispanic, African American, or female, and against Caucasian and Asian men", the lawsuit says.

The Wall Street Journal, in reporting on Wilberg's lawsuit, noted that "people familiar with YouTube's and Google's hiring practices" corroborated both the hiring freeze and the use of quotas. It's also alleged that management deleted emails and other records about diversity requirements late previous year.

As the The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, a lawsuit filed in January by former YouTube recruiter Arne Wilberg alleges that he was sacked for resisting what he calls illegal and discriminatory efforts to diversify Google's workforce. In a statement, Google pushes back, saying that although "we unapologetically try to find a diverse pool of qualified candidates for open roles ... we have a clear policy to hire candidates based on their merit, not their identity".

Wilberg said his manager sent an email to his team past year, telling them to only accept candidates from "historically underrepresented groups" for a particular job opening.

What do you think of Wilberg's lawsuit?

The problem is that mandatory quotas based on gender or ethnicity may violate United States anti-discrimination laws, depending on how they're implemented. They then mentioned that Google's racial and gender preferences in hiring were not up for debate, because this was morally and economically the best thing to do for Google.

A former YouTube employee has filed a discrimination suit against the world's largest video site, alleging that its policy was to hire zero white or Asian men for tech positions.

In an email to The Register, a Google spokesperson said the company intends to vigorously defend against these claims.

Google has been training its employees how to recognize unconscious bias, but Damore's memo is proof that diversity is not always seen as part of Google's cultural values. In another encounter, Wilberg recalls, "One team member complained that managers were speaking about blacks like they were objects". Managers then reportedly deleted all emails about diversity goals in an attempt to hide them from any further scrutiny.

A few months back, James Damore, a former Google employee, claimed that he was sacked for writing an anti-diversity memo, which triggered loads of controversy both within and outside the organization. In a way, Google even popularized the idea of transparency around diversity numbers as a defensive tactic against claims about systemic inequality.
