At 89, the great gay filmmaker James Ivory became the oldest gay Oscar victor, taking home his first Academy Award for his adaptation of the novel of the same name, Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman.

The film focuses on Elio (Timothee Chalamet), a precocious but bored 17-year-old American who becomes transfixed by Oliver (Armie Hammer), the handsome graduate student who has come to work with Elio's professor father in Lombardy.

Not only is this a fantastic win for Call Me By Your Name, but its also a great win for Ivory because he is now the oldest Oscar victor in history.

Ivory then praised the film itself for its depiction of first love. Varda, a filmmaking legend who was instrumental in the development of the French New Wave, is 89 - nine days older than Ivory.

"Whether straight or gay or somewhere in between, we've all gone through first love, I hope, mostly intact", Ivory, a first-time nominee for his writing, said on stage. Ivory is no stranger to the Academy Awards; he's been nominated three other times in the directing category, but Sunday night marked his first-ever Oscar win.

Best Actress victor Frances McDormand gave Kim a shoutout during her acceptance speech Sunday night.

He said, "I wouldn't be standing up here without the inspired help I received from my life's partners who are gone, our writer Ruth [Prawer] Jhabvala, who received this award twice, and our fearless producer Ismail Merchant".

Ivory is noted for his adaptations of LGBT novels, as one half of former production company Merchant Ivory. He also thanked his former romantic partner and film collaborator of 44-years, Ishmail Marchant, who died in 2005.

Actor Timothée Chalamet lost the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role to Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour. Backstage they had a "thank you cam" set up and had a press area.

Call Me By Your Name also won the BAFTA for Best Adapted screenplay earlier this year.

Distributor Lassaad Goubantini denounced the decision as "an attack on liberties" motivated by "the subject of the film".
