  • Chandrababu Naidu to Seek Support of Other Parties Against Centre Over Special Status

As the second phase of Parliament's Budget Session commenced on 5 March, Andhra Pradesh MPs led protests in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha demanding Special Category status to their state.

Rama Krishna said the Centre has been dragging on its feet on honouring the commitment of granting the special category status since 2014, when Andhra Pradesh was divided and Telangana was formed.

He was in Parliament till the afternoon and also participated in a demonstration outside Parliament House against the Punjab National Bank fraud involving fugitive jewellers Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi. The Congress leader later tweeted that a united Opposition can force the Centre "to do justice to the people of Andhra [Pradesh]". TDP MPs who stormed the well continued their fight for special status, while TRS MPs who also stormed the well demanded that the Constitution must be amended so that states must be able to decide reservations in jobs and education. "As per the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, and the assurances made, the Government of India (GoI) has to fulfil commitments of the special category status, bridging the resource gap and completion of the Polavaram project with the funds of GoI", the Governor said.

The protesters claim that the bifurcation caused a huge revenue deficit for the successor Andhra Pradesh. However, subsequently, the 14th Finance Commission brought in various changes which subsumed some of the earlier provisions of special category states.

The Chief Minister is believed to have got disappointed when he heard that the Centre had rejected the demand and the incentives to industry on the ground that other States might seek it.

"But our (AP) chief minister received a call from New Delhi after which he chose to watch the developments in the coming days, based on which further decisions will be taken".

He reminded that Congress, which had played with Telugu people, lost address in the state, the BJP should remember that.

What is more humiliating to the TDP delegation was that the finance department said it had granted Rs 12,500 crore to Andhra Pradesh in the last three and a half years, but the state had not produced accounts even for expenditure of a single rupee.
