Analysts say the government has been alarmed by the speed with which the trouble spread in two districts of Kandy and sought to contain it through the imposition of emergency.

Cabinet Spokesperson Rajitha Senaratne said the government had asked service providers to block social messaging networks after Facebook posts threatening attacks against Muslims.

Canada is among the countries, also including Denmark, Norway and the USA, to issue warnings to citizens in Sri Lanka.

All police leave has been cancelled and authorities are blocking social media.

The government has ordered more troops to reinforce police and stop the unrest spreading.

Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said there had been several disturbances throughout Tuesday night in the Kandy area, renowned for its tea plantations and scenic hills.

"You should exercise caution, avoid protests and rallies and comply with local security requirements".

The UN under secretary general, Jeffrey Feltman is due to visit Sri Lanka this week.
