Microsoft's Bringing Azure Stack to Government Customers
08 March, 2018, 03:45 | Author: Arnold Gilbert
In terms of Azure Stack, the wait is almost over for USA government agencies, revealed Tom Keane, head of Global Infrastructure at Microsoft Azure, in a March 5 announcement. And that the new Platform is designed for governments and agencies with requirements for on-field servers, for example, it can be used in a military operation or an embassy overseas.
"Azure Stack is an extension of Azure, and government customers can leverage these powerful hybrid capabilities to bring core and advanced cloud services to the edge, whether it's field office, tank or aircraft", she said.
It is predominantly targeted at governments and governmental organisations that are looking to run cloud services, but within their own on-premise server environments. AWS led the market with 32 percent, with Microsoft at 14 percent, according to Canalys estimates for the fourth quarter of a year ago.
Microsoft is looking to take on companies such as Amazon and IBM, which already offer tailored cloud programmes for governments around the world. The company said Azure Stack would be integrated with the Azure government cloud by the middle of 2018.
The company is competing against Amazon in the space with the combination of its localised cloud product, Azure Stack and its version of Azure specifically tailored to the needs of governments, Azure Government.
The latest move means public sector users of the Azure Government cloud will soon be able to use Azure Stack to move their data, applications and workloads between their on-premise datacentres and the Microsoft cloud with greater ease. ExpressRoute enables organizations to bypass the public internet by establishing direct links to Azure data centers, a ploy used to improve security and avoid inconsistent networking performance.
Continuing with the announcements, Microsoft also said it's planning to make two new Azure Government regions available in the US, bringing the total number to eight. The two new regions can accommodate government data classified secrets, noted Keane.
