Valve Back in the Game-Making Bizz, Gabe Newell Confirms

11 March, 2018, 03:08 | Author: Arnold Gilbert
  • Valve “jealous of Nintendo” as it prepares to “start shipping games again” – Newell

Newell also didn't say anything about any new shooters, so we likely won't be dealing with anything related to Half Life at any point in the future. Sure, that means a solid level of production quality when the game eventually releases, but future releases are probably still at least half a decade a way based on Valve's standard development speed. The game became memetic immediately mainly for the crowd-spanning groan of disappointment that came after the reveal, but we have Valve making games again. It's nice that Valve will now be making more games, but it's hard to get too excited while there's still nothing to be seen. In the past year or so, Valve has already admitted that they have a singleplayer game and three VR projects in the pipeline. "Additionally, Artifact will feature a marketplace and workshop, much like the one that Dota 2 players can use to buy and sell in-game items", the report read. This is thanks to the investments made for Steam VR and the Vive headset, which has given the company the chance to develop their own hardware expertise. Newell hinted that may impact how they treat their game designs going forward.

"We've always been a little bit jealous of companies like Nintendo", Newell said.

Furthermore, Newell expressed concerns about the direction that the PC games market was set in - saying that it was becoming more of a closed ecosystem. "When Miyamoto is sitting down and thinking about the next version of Zelda or Mario, he's thinking what is the controller going to look like, what sort of graphics and other capabilities".

"You can see that Microsoft was like, wow, how can we make Windows more like [Apple]?"

Geoff Keighley has shared some screenshots from Artifact and stated that while the game will not feature any single-player mode, players will be able to play against AI bots. That's four more in addition to Artifact, with a notable focus on custom hardware, so those could be the games he was referring to. Creating a closed platform for PC is a bad thing, not just for Valve's business, but also for consumer freedom.
