Macron and Modi kick start International Solar Alliance

Macron took a jibe at US President Donald Trump at the summit for his decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Change agreement.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid were among the world leaders who attended the summit. "We need to encourage innovation in the solar energy sector to find different uses for it", he said. "This commitment by France was met a couple of months ago".

The ISA was conceived after PM Modi's 2015 speech in London where he proposed the idea of an inter-governmental organisation comprising of 121 countries, which lie either completely or partly between the two Tropics, with an aim to promote solar energy. Out of those, 60 have signed the solar treaty and some 30 have ratified it.

ISA was launched jointly by the Indian Prime Minister and the French President during COP21 held in December 2015 in Paris, France. "May you bless us...", she said, with folded hands. "We should not forget that we only have one planet and we are sharing it and for that there is no alternative". There is a joint destiny which means we also have some joint duties. While India tries to become the beacon-holder for developing nations in clean energy, France is looking for markets to sell its innovations and try to bridge the gap that has been left open by the exit of the United States from the Paris Agreement.

The UAE, thanks to its wise leadership, remains steadfast in its efforts to support and deploy renewable energy solutions, particularly solar energy, both locally and internationally.

ADB's energy policy commits $3 billion per year by 2020 for promoting clean energy, including solar energy projects in its developing member countries, said Mr. "One hundred projects have already been listed", he said, further calling the member states that investments in "these projects are very profitable". The inclination of our wise leadership to reaffirm the UAE's position at the forefront of global efforts to address common challenges shows that the drive to increase the local dependence on renewable energy, particularly solar power, and boost its demand globally was indeed an act of its own volition that targeted creating a better future for generations to come. They did not wait and stop because some countries (US and others) just made a decision to leave the floor and leave the Paris agreement.

But the efforts of governments were not enough to achieve the 2030 goal and private sector industry, worldwide institutions and civil society would have to join in, Macron added.

At the founding, the world's major development banks also sort to back the initiative.

In the last few years, cheaper supply of panels and modules helped India bring down per unit solar tariffs to the level where the technology could compete with fossil fuel-generated electricity.

China is targeting over 360 GW of renewable capacity generation during the period.
