  • Law enforcement officers are shown near the scene of a barricaded suspect incident in Pomona

One police officer was killed and another was wounded on Friday night by a suspect who barricaded himself in a home in California. Pomona police Chief Michael Olivieri announced the tragic news early Saturday morning, while a standoff with the suspect continues. The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Isaias De Jesus Valencia, of Pomona.

Authorities told reporters the incident began with a police chase near the apartment complex after the suspect was in a vehicle crash. The pursuit ended when Valencia's pickup truck crashed into a parked vehicle, and he took off on foot, according to Capt. Chris Bergner of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He shot through the door, striking the two officers, according to the release.

The episode began after officers from Pomona, a city of about 150,000 people 30 miles outside of Los Angeles, responded to a call of a person driving recklessly.

A Times photo posted to Twitter Saturday afternoon showed an unidentified man, dressed only in underwear, being led away by police in handcuffs.

There have been no other injuries or deaths since the two police officers were struck by the suspect's gunfire just after 9 Friday night, Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told CNN. Several law enforcement agencies were involved in the standoff with the gunman, including members of the sheriff's SWAT and crisis negotiation teams.

The injured officer is expected to recover. The suspect may still be barricaded in a building. "Ultimately, the suspect was taken into custody".

'Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of our brother, Officer Gregg Casillas, ' the department said on Twitter.

Other Pomona PD officers managed to extract the two wounded officers and both were rushed to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

"Another hero gone too soon", Beck tweeted. Casillas received his Pomona Police Department badge in September 2017. "His ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten".
