A package exploded early Tuesday at a FedEx distribution facility in Texas, news reports said, two days after the latest in a series of blasts in Austin attributed to a serial bomber.

Sunday's attack means the carnage by a suspected serial bomber that has terrorized Austin for weeks is now random, rather than targeted at someone in particular.

Even before the report of the Goodwill scare, it had been a busy day. "At this time, we have no reason to believe this incident is related to previous package bombs". ATF spokeswoman Nicole Strong said that early indications are that no one was injured.

"A package had been traveling along the automated conveyer when it exploded", Schertz Police Chief Michael Hansen said at a Tuesday morning press conference.

Investigators later found an undetonated bomb disguised as a package at a FedEx store near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Southeast Austin, and confirmed that a package delivery store in Sunset Valley is believed to be the source of the bomb that exploded in Schertz.

The package, filled with nails and metal shrapnel, exploded shortly after midnight local time at the facility, about 105km south of Austin, the San Antonio Fire Department said on Twitter. "It was so dark they couldn't tell, and they tripped", Grote said.

Authorities say public safety is the number-one priority following a package explosion near San Antonio.

While the first five explosions have been deemed by authorities to be related, and possibly the work of a serial bomber, early reports from the ATF and Federal Bureau of Investigation in Austin are asserting that this latest explosion was not a package bomb and is not related to the previous events. Police asked anyone with surveillance cameras at their homes to come forward with the footage on the chance it captured suspicious vehicles or people.

- A package bomb exploded shortly after midnight Tuesday inside a FedEx distribution center in Schertz, Texas, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and ATF are at the scene, spokeswomen for both agencies told The Washington Post.

Austin police have made the unusual step of appealing to the person or people responsible for the bombings to reach out and speak with authorities. Suspicious packages: 9 red flags of potential dangerIn a statement, FedEx officials said the same person responsible for sending the package also shipped a second parcel that has been secured and turned over to law enforcement.

The blast follows a Sunday night blast that was triggered along a street by a almost invisible tripwire, suggesting a "higher level of sophistication" than agents saw in three early package bombs left on doorsteps.

The first three explosions - one on March 2, and two more on March 12 - killed or wounded three African-American people and one Hispanic person after they encountered the packages.

"And eventually, this person is going to make a mistake delivering to a place like this and is going to get caught", Paxton says. "I think everybody can now say, 'Oh, that's like my neighbourhood, '" he said.

Kennedy said authorities also are likely to learn something from the locations where the devices were planted.

The fourth explosion, on Sunday, injured two white men.

US President Donald Trump gestures as he speaks during the 2018 White House business session with state governors in the State dining Room of the White House on February 26, 2018 in Washington, DC.

During an Oval Office meeting Tuesday with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the president said, "This is obviously a very sick individual or individuals", and authorities are "working to get to the bottom of it". Austin police say they have now responded to more than 1,200 reports of suspicious packages in a little more than a week - without finding anything unsafe.

But Manley said police have been unable to determine a motive for the bombings.
