How Much Did Pritzker, Rauner Spend, Per Vote?

  • Illinois Primary Election Results: 6th House District

In several districts now held by Republican congressmen - areas where Democrats have sometimes struggled to field even one candidate - roughly a half dozen Democrats sought the nomination.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner claimed victory Tuesday night in the Republican primary to run for re-election in November. As a cornerstone of IL "regular" Democrats, Madigan was on a different wavelength from Pat Quinn, who rose to prominence as a party renegade and sometimes gadfly.

As ABC 7 Chicago reports, Jesus "Chuy" Garcia won the state's 4th district against community organizer Sol Flores and Chicago police officer Richard Gonzalez in a race with a wider margin.

"I am humbled, I am honored", Rauner told supporters. "You have given me the chance to win the battle against the corruption that plagues IL". "On to victory. On to victory".

During his victory speech, Rauner called Pritzker a pawn for House Speaker Mike Madigan, which has become one of his favorite catch phrases.

His victory was narrow in part because of a backlash by conservatives, who point to his signing of Democratic bills on abortion and immigration - and blame him for a two-year budget impasse that ended with a tax increase and nearly none of his agenda.

"To those of you around the state of IL who wanted to send me a message, let me be clear: I have heard you", said Rauner. State Rep. Jeanne Ives, a fiscal and social conservative, argued the first-term governor betrayed the party on issues such as immigration and abortion. "But today, the popular revolt against the political ruling class fell just a bit short". "And so I believe we've got to make sure that we're competitive in this 2018 election so that we can remove Bruce Rauner from the governorship and then get real campaign finance reform and make real changes to the government", Pritzker said.

Meanwhile, billionaire businessman J.B. Pritzker will be Rauner's Democratic challenger.

Madison, St. Clair and Monroe county Democrats all went with Pritzker, but the St. Clair County GOP broke with the others' support of Rauner and favored Ives, 3-2. Pritzker shouted to cheering supporters.

State Sen. Daniel Biss, of the Chicago suburbs, finished second among Democrats for governor but still far behind Pritzker. His opponents in the primary even termed his "fraud" and "liar" but Pritzker remained indifferent to the criticism. They acknowledged the tough campaigning, but were relatively conciliatory in defeat.

John Couvillon, president of JMC Analytics and Polling, said the races in IL - much like the primaries earlier this month in Texas - showed a "much higher degree of Democratic enthusiasm than was present for the primaries for the 2010 and 2014 midterm elections". Ameya Pawar, who dropped out of the race a year ago. Voters also picked a likely successor to longtime Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D) as well as the winners in primaries for governor, attorney general, and legislative races.

On the Democratic side, Lisa Madigan's surprise retirement announcement past year made eight Democrats and two Republicans think: I could do that job. Kwame Raoul defeated Pat Quinn, a former governor. And that brings us right back to where this essay started.

That included former Gov.

Biss, a Harvard-educated mathematician who gave up teaching to enter politics, set up a website to track what he says is a $171,000-a-day campaign by Pritzker. He lost by less than three percentage points. The group also funded a challenge to House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, who didn't vote for the tax increase but attracted conservative anger for his failure to hold his caucus together and stop it. Mr. Durkin won easily.

"As one of the most unpopular governors in the country, Bruce Rauner heads into the general election with a splintered Republican Party and limited support", wrote Caprara.
