Deputies, the school nursing staff and others provided first aid to the three teens who were shot, including applying a tourniquet and performing CPR, Cameron said.

Two teenagers were shot and injured at a high school in Great Mills, Maryland, on Tuesday morning, allegedly by a classmate who may have had a prior relationship with one of them, authorities said. Sheriff Cameron said Deputy Gaskill fired at the shooter, and nearly simultaneously, the shooter also fired.

In Maryland, it wasn't immediately clear whether the shooter took his own life or was killed by the officer's bullet, St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said, though the officer was credited with preventing any more loss of life.

"Our school resource officer who was stationed inside the school was alerted to the event and the shots being fired", Cameron said."He pursued the shooter, engaged the shooter; during that engagement he fired a round at the shooter".

Authorities initially said Rollins shot the male victim after shooting the female victim but later said they needed to investigate further before determining if he shot both.

"That's a potential", Cameron replied, declining to speculate on a possible motive for the shooting.

Jaelynn Willey is a junior at Great Mills and competes for her school as well as Great Mills Aquatic Club. The school resource officer, who doubles as a SWAT team member, was not injured, the sheriff said.

Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md., 5th), attending the initial briefing held at Loffler Senior Activity Center in nearby Chancellor's Run Regional Park, told reporters that "whatever action [the officer] took may have saved lives".

U.S. President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association have proposed arming teachers trained in firearms use to combat the threat of school shootings, while gun safety advocates have demanded a ban on semiautomatic rifles, among other laws. "It's unfortunate that in this day and age, our children can not even feel safe at school".

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Gaskill is a "capable. tough guy" who "took the right kind of action". "... It's devastating my heart is broken, but thank God (my daughter) was not there".

The school shooting was over in seconds.

Her original tweet on the day of the walkout last week said, "It crushes me that this hasn't ended yet, but today left me feeling more empowered than anything". "We had several first-hand witnesses to this incident". "All students did exactly what we've been talking about the past few weeks and they fled the building".

A fight led to a shooting in the parking lot of Lincoln High School, fatally wounding a 32-year-old man.

School resource officer Blaine Gaskill.

"This is just the beginning of a very long and tragic process that we will go through in St. Mary's County", Smith said.

"Although our pain remains fresh and the facts remain uncertain, today's disgusting events should not be an excuse to pause our conversation about school safety", the governor said.
