Rain disrupted nearly all of the second day of the first test between New Zealand and England on Friday, with the hosts managing to extend their lead to 171 runs before they were forced from the field for good ahead of the final session.

Tim Southee is mindful of how well placed New Zealand are in the rain-affected first Test against England, but the pace bowler is starting to get frustrated that the game has barely moved on since day one. The forecast for the final two days remains promising, albeit with a chance of showers in the afternoon on Sunday.

The Black Caps were on 229-4 when rain caused the day to come to a premature end, 171 runs ahead as they replied to the tourists' 58.

But lengthy rain disruptions have meant they advanced only 58 more runs in just 25 available overs in the following two days.

The rain that has dampened New Zealand's hopes of a Test victory in Auckland has offered a lifeline to a battle-scarred England - but they will need improve their mindset to save the match, according to Graham Thorpe.

Nicholls, who resumed the day on 24, had advanced to 49 when rain stopped play for the second time, 68 minutes into the middle session, with BJ Watling on 17.

He faced 220 deliveries to bat New Zealand into a position of dominance with partnerships of 84 with Tom Latham, 31 with Ross Taylor and 83 with Nicholls.

Southee and Boult (6-32) bowled all 20.4 overs of England's innings between them and the right-armer jokingly said that while he had played second fiddle to his colleague, he was happy as long as they were taking wickets.

Bowled out for a pitiful 58 on the first day, the English have since been aided by terrible Auckland weather, shortening both the second and third days.

"The important thing is what happens in the rest of the game and the confidence of the players, trying to clear your minds", Thorpe said.

The second test, a standard daytime match, is at Hagley Oval in Christchurch from March 30-April 3.
