The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITy) has sent a notice to data mining and analysis firm Cambridge Analytica, which is at the heart of the case involving alleged breach of Facebook user data, seeking information about its clients in India and whether it had harvested their user profiles. The search lasted seven hours, according to the BBC.

The commissioner said she wanted to access the firm's servers in order to investigate the use of personal data in political campaigns.

Cambridge Analytica's board of directors suspended Nix on Tuesday shortly before British broadcaster Channel 4 aired an expose of the firm's business practices in the United States.

The office said the inquiry would "consider how political parties and campaigns, data analytics companies and social media platforms in the United Kingdom are using and analyzing people's personal information to micro target voters". "We will now need to assess and consider the evidence before deciding the next steps and coming to any conclusions". "In my opinion, I felt like we should say, 'this is exactly what we did'". "We have not undertaken any paid or unpaid work for them, okay?" he told a committee investigating fake news in United Kingdom politics.

He apologised for the firm's involvement, but said it had licensed the data from a research company, led by an academic, that "had not received consent from most respondents".

On March 21, CEO Mark Zuckerberg issued an apology for Facebook's mishandling of personal information and called the intervention "a breach of trust between Facebook and the people who share their data with us and expect us to protect it". Reuters adds that New Delhi's concerns arose when opposing Indian parties accused each other of using Cambridge Analytica services; one of the sides claimed the course of forthcoming election could be affected.

The scandal over the way Cambridge Analytica obtained personal information to try to manipulate USA voters "is the most important moment that Facebook has faced since it went public (in 2012)", according to Professor Andrew Przybylski of Oxford University, one of the world's leading authorities on social media psychology.

However, Cambridge University announced Friday it was "undertaking a wide-ranging review" of the episode and had written to Facebook "to request all relevant evidence in their possession".
