Trump privately proposed military funding for his border wall, report says

  • Congress didn't give Trump the money he wants for his border wall, so now he reportedly wants the military to build it

President Donald Trump is floating the idea of using the military's budget to pay for his long-promised border wall with Mexico.

Trump discussed the idea in a private meeting last week with House Speaker Paul Ryan, a source familiar with the conversations said, as he reviewed the omnibus spending bill, which does not include funding for construction of a border wall.

Over the weekend, he tweeted, "Building a great Border Wall, with drugs (poison) and enemy combatants pouring into our Country, is all about National Defense".

The Washington Post on Tuesday detailed how Trump confided to his advisers that he regretted signing the omnibus spending bill last week, which allotted just $1.6 billion for the wall.

Pressed on whether Trump's campaign promise to get Mexico to pay for the wall was off the table, Sanders replied, "I'm not going to go beyond what the president's already said". Now, he is privately pushing the USA military to fund construction of his signature project. So dumb was this declaration that even Trump eventually realized he would have to tweak it, probably around the time that Mexico's president, Enrique Peña Nieto, said there was no way in hell he would fund the project. Not only will Democrats take a hard pass military spending paying for his fence, but Pentagon officials, per White House advisers, "may also blanch at the possibility".

Trump and his allies have been reaching out to several lawyers in recent weeks, including some who had turned Trump down after he interviewed them last spring and summer to be his personal lawyer in Mueller's investigation into Moscow's interference in the 2016 election and whether the president's campaign coordinated with Russian Federation in this effort.

Last week, Trump expressed displeasure with the funding agreement and threatened briefly not to sign it, but ultimately relented and then continued to express his displeasure on Twitter. "Certainly that's one", the official said.

As the Washington Post reported, Trump has suggested to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and leaders in Congress that the construction of the border wall would address a "national security" risk and that the Pentagon should pay for it. Trump has sought $25 billion for the border wall.

"Because by having a strong border system, including a wall, we are in a position, militarily, that is very advantageous". Pentagon spokesperson Chris Sherwood referred all questions on the wall to the White House, where press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders deflected them, saying she was "not going to get into the specifics of that".
