Desperate to Regain Trust, Facebook Refreshes Privacy Tools

Analysts said the revamps Facebook rolled out on Wednesday looked more like tweaks than big changes, making data management more transparent rather than changing the way the company does business.

FACEBOOK yesterday launched a fresh effort to quell the firestorm over the hijacking of personal data, unveiling new privacy tools and settings to give users more control over how their information is shared. Following news that millions of users' personal data had been collected without permission by a third party, the social media giant caught some flak for the way it handled metadata collection on Android.

The updates include easier access to Facebook's user settings and tools to easily search for, download and delete personal data stored on the site used by two billion people.

To enable controls that are easier to find and use, Facebook announced a redesign of the entire settings menu on mobile devices from top to bottom to make things easier to find.

Facebook has come under increasing pressure from Europe and the U.S.to address revelations that political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, which worked with Donald Trump's presidential campaign, harvested data from about 50 million Facebook users as it built an election-consulting company that boasted it could sway voters in contests all over the world.

"We'll also update our data policy to better spell out what data we collect and how we use it".

New changes for privacy and data won't be available immediately, but it will be released in the coming weeks, according to Facebook.

Facebook has not been having a good time in the public eye lately.

Another big concern, he said, is whether Facebook's default settings continue to encourage consumers to share large amounts of data. "Accordingly, a letter has been issued by the Ministry of Electronics & IT on March 28, 2018 to Facebook seeking their response", Meity said in a statement. Three congressional committees have requested he appear.

The change could shine a light on the little-understood data practices that undergird the enormous digital advertising industry that serves as the revenue engine for much of Silicon Valley.

Authorities in Britain have meanwhile seized data from Cambridge Analytica in their investigation, and European Union officials have warned of consequences for Facebook.

But research has shown that changes in design, sometimes called privacy nudges, can affect people's behavior, said Lorrie Cranor, director of the Cylab Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University and the US Federal Trade Commission's former chief technologist.

The Indian government's notice to Facebook sought to know "whether Facebook or its related or downstream agencies utilizing Facebook's data have previously been engaged by any entities to manipulate the Indian electoral process".

"Be sure you're not signing in through other apps and using Facebook to sign in".
