The White House said Monday that a possible meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the two discussed in a phone call last month, could take place at the White House.

The Kremlin says the invitation was extended during the same March 20 phone call in which Mr Trump congratulated Mr Putin on his re-election victory after being explicitly warned not to.

The two sides have had no preparatory conversations since the March 20 call in which the leaders discussed the idea due to their tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats over the poisoning of a former spy in the U.K., Ushakov said.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participate in the 2018 White House Easter Egg Roll. The Kremlin said to trust preparations for a meeting between two leaders to begin, but admitted that it seems complicated given deterioration of bilateral relationship following case of poisoning of Russian ex-spy Sergey Skripal in English city of Salisbury.

Mr McFaul said he feared that Mr Trump "thinks that a good meeting with [Mr] Putin is the objective of his foreign policy with Russian Federation".

Earlier in the week, the U.S., the U.K., North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and 25 other countries announced the expulsion of dozens of Russian diplomats in response to the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal in British that was allegedly orchestrated by the Kremlin.

White House welcomes are typically reserved for friends and allies.

She added that the administration had no further comment on the matter.

"I would like to believe that [preparation for the meeting] will start", Ushakov said, adding that he hopes Washington puts the measures based on "absolutely unsubstantiated charges" on hold.

The prospect of Putin visiting Washington is likely to sharpen divisions in the USA over relations with Russian Federation amid continued tensions regarding alleged Kremlin meddling in the 2016 US presidential elections. The U.S. has since joined the United Kingdom and other countries and expelled 60 Russian diplomats of its own. Russian Federation retaliated in kind, ejecting 60 American diplomats from St. Petersburg.

Tensions also continue with the U.S. investigation into alleged meddling by Russian Federation in the 2016 presidential election.

As we reported earlier, Donald Trump first met with Russia's President on July 7 a year ago, within the G20 summit in Hamburg.
