Dr Angelou had received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees in her life. In her 1996 GLAAD speech, she famously said, "I am gay".

The mesmerising story focused on her life up to the age of 16 - dealing with being a child in a confusing adult world. He was imprisoned and later beaten to death after released from jail. The man was killed by her uncles when she revealed about the incident.

While Dr. Angelou never placed any real label on her sexuality, she was open about the fact that, as a sex worker, she engaged in sex with other women.

MAYA ANGELOU, the phenomenal African-American writer, poet and civil rights activist, would have been 90 years old today.

Maya was horrified, and did not speak for five years. At the age of three, her parents separated and she along with her brother went to live with her grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas.

During that dark time, books and poetry became her solace and constant companions, eventually helping her find her voice again. She'd never worked as a journalist before, but her job at the Observer tossed her into the deep end of reporting while working in an office full of men who'd never worked with a woman before.

She was even nominated for a Tony Award in 1973 for best Supporting or Featured Actress for her role in the play Look Away. She was also one of the first African-American female members to join the Directors Guild of America after releasing her 1972 film titled Georgia, Georgia about an interracial romance. She was also friends with Malcom X, and helped him set up new civil rights group-the Organization of Afro-American Unity-shortly before he was killed on February 21, 1965. She was also a coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and organized with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

But let's begin by watching Dr. Angelou recite this wonderful poem. Lending her voice to President Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993, Angelou was the first poet since Frost to enjoy the honor of the august platform, reading the centuries-spanning epic "On the Pulse of Morning", which she wrote for the occasion.

Maya was born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St Louis, Missouri, USA, on April 4, 1928. The Welcome Table to explore recipes that held personal meaning for her, and with Great Food, All Day Long, she shared an abiding love of preparing meals for others while focusing on healthy courses.
