Sinclair's Local Anchors Decry Fake News Via Same Script

  • Sinclair Broadcast Group owns over 200 local news stations across the United States including WGN

President Donald Trump is defending Sinclair Broadcast Group as the company is facing backlash after videos aired of anchors at its TV stations across the country reading the same media-bashing promo.

But pressuring the advertisers at Sinclair's 193 TV stations around the country would prove more hard than in other boycott efforts, which have targeted the national brands running ads across national platforms, such as Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle". Unfortunately, some members of the media use their platforms to push their own personal bias and agenda to control "exactly what people think" ...

Sinclair again has shown how corporate control of local news can be unsafe for democracy.

A viral video showing dozens of local news anchors recite ultra-conservative, pro-Trump rhetoric as if from a script, and in unison, has a lot of folks concerned.

Sinclair's conservative views are a subject of discussion and is a factor as the company is looking to expand by purchasing Tribune Media which is now under review by federal regulators.

Trump tweeted that "The Fake News Networks, those that knowingly have a sick and biased AGENDA, are anxious about the competition and quality of Sinclair Broadcast".

Sinclair, based outside Baltimore, began airing the promotional campaign last week during newscasts on its stations across the country.

While Trump supports Sinclair's deal to acquire Tribune Broadcasting, he has criticized the possible acquisition between Time Warner and AT&T, because they are parents of the network he condemns continuously, including CNN.

Sinclair owns almost 200 local TV stations, and mandated dozens of on-air talent to read a promo bashing what it calls "fake news".

The anchors were also told not to wear red, blue or purple while they spoke, to avoid looking political. "The goal is to look apolitical, neutral, non-partisan yet professional", the instructions read, according to CNN's report.

Justin Simmons, a morning TV producer at a Nebraska station owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, announced on Twitter Wednesday that he has left his post.

Norma Holland from "13WHAM News" tells the public she did not want to read the script, but was anxious about losing her job.

Among others, John Oliver skewered Sinclair's campaign during his HBO program, "Last Week Tonight", on Sunday. It's far greater than the percentage of Americans who they get their news through newspapers (18%), radio (25%), social media (20%) and even from news websites (33%).

Sinclair did not immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment.

On the show's most recent episode, however, Oliver had new reason to wade back in Sinclair's murky waters. "I felt like a POW recording a message", one of the anchors told the Reliable Sourceshost.

This isn't the first time Sinclair has run up against criticism for its coverage that appears to favor Trump.
