  • Modi holds talks with Nepal prime minister, announces new railway, petroleum products line

The two Prime Ministers underlined the need for expeditious implementation of bilateral projects in Nepal, and to reinvigorate the existing bilateral mechanisms to promote cooperative agenda across diverse spheres.

After the talks with Oli, Modi told reporters that both countries have agreed to expedite all connectivity projects. "The (other) key areas of development are connectivity, railways and agriculture", he said after delegation-level talks between the two sides.

This is Oli's first visit to India after became the Prime Minister of Nepal for the second time in February this year after the Left Alliance swept the elections in November-December 2017. Having flexed its muscles in the wake of the purported economic blockade by India in 2015 and moved closer to China, it is now flush with success.

Talking about discussions on defence and security issues, Modi said India and Nepal have close and deep connection on the matters of defence and security.

A joint statement issued after the talks said Prime Minister Oli stated that his government attaches high importance to further strengthening friendly relations with India.

"I have come to India with a mission to enhance our relations to newer heights commensurate with the realities of the 21st Century".

In his address, President Ram Nath Kovind said, "It's India's abiding interest in the stability and economic prosperity of Nepal".

"PM Oli's vision of "prosperous Nepal and developed Nepal" is compatible to sabka sath sabka vikas", Mr. Modi said.

Oli was received by Home Minister Rajnath Singh in the national capital on Friday.

India is believed to be attempting to rebuild its relationship with Oli. We have developed our friendship according to time with a goal to eradicate poverty, improve living standards.

The Nepalese PM said friendship was more important than signing agreements.

Referring to the decision to develop the inland waterways within the framework of trade and transit arrangements, Oli said the additional connectivity would have enormous impact on the growth of business and economy in Nepal.

This is perceived to be in response to reports that China and Nepal had agreed to start technical works to build a cross-border railway link via Tibet to boost connectivity. Relations between neighbours are different than others. Oli assured that "Nepal will extend full cooperation for early completion of the requisite surveys for the new rail line". "We wish to take forward our relationship on the basis of goodwill, mutual trust and mutual benefit".

The senior government official said India would unroll the red carpet for Oli and his 53-member delegation during their three-day visit, but he would also hear about Delhi's "red lines", especially in the energy and security sectors.
