He called for the auction of an 1890 Italian violin created by Leandro Bisiach Snr, which Crowe bought after being disappointed with his prop violin in the film "Master and Commander". He and Spencer separated in 2012.

A replica Roman chariot sold for AU$65,000 (about $50,000) while the torso the actor wore in his Oscar-winning hit Gladiator sold for AU$125,000 (about $96,000).

A mixture of 227 items was on auction at the event held at Carriageworks, a railyard-turned-art center in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday as part of the Australia-based New Zealander's divorce settlement.

"G'day folks... Are you having a little bit of fun?" began Crowe, before offering a suggestion to the future owner of the violin.

"This is boring", said one man in the audience as bidders battled over Crowe's crew pass for the movie, a simple yellow card on a nylon lanyard which eventually sold for $2700.

Before the auction, Sotheby's predicted the eclectic offerings, covering films, guitars, art, watches, sporting memorabilia and Crowe's jewellery gifts to Spencer, would bring between 2.6 million (£1.4 million) and 3.7 million Australian dollars (£2 million). "So it's been a lot of fun putting it together for you".

The father-of-two stepped aside as a young violinist played songs from the film on the iconic violin before bidding commenced and the instrument sold for $135,000 AUD or roughly $104,000 Dollars.

More surprisingly, a costume that Crowe wore in the same 2003 film was not far behind, raking in 115,000 Australian dollars (£62,635).

Bidders' interest had been expected to focus on the violin and paraphernalia from "Gladiator", the 2000 blockbuster that earned Crowe his Academy Award for Best Actor. While only expected to fetch $500-700 AUD or $380-530 United States dollars, a telephone bidder paid $11,000 AUD or roughly $8,400 USD for the piece.

The Gladiator replica chariot went for A$65,000 (€40,595), almost seven times above estimate, but the neo-Nazi boots from Romper Stomper went on estimate at A$10,000 (€6,245).

A leather jockstrap worn by Crowe in the 2005 movie Cinderella Man was won by a telephone bidder for $7000.

Auction house Sotheby's conducted the bidding process, taking a 22 percent commission, which the buyers have to pay on top of the bid money.

Crowe also parted with a collection of artwork, including the 1960 Charles Blackman work "The Suitor", which sold for $360,000. The pair sold for AU$10,000, while Sotheby's anticipated between AU$10,000 and AU$15,000.
