Lewis Hamilton questions Max Verstappen's maturity

  • Lewis Hamilton was left bemused by a group of people in front of his Mercedes pit-box

Hamilton was only fifth and fourth respectively in yesterday's practice sessions with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen setting the pace ahead of team-mate Vettel. the Italian team seemed to have the advantage over Mercedes in the hotter temperatures. "Often when the auto outside is running out of road, if you look at it I was ahead for quite a period of time, and then I accepted defeat, and I just I backed out, because I knew he was going to try to run me wide, maybe", he said. "I don't know what Lewis did, but we've all been in that situation". If you haven't spoken about it and set up a strategy to action what you need, the guys are stressed in the garage because they have messages from the pit-wall, messages coming from both sides, it's stressful for someone like "Bono" and then I come in.

"I like to think if I was in that vehicle today I would have got points for Red Bull".

But Hamilton said a more experienced driver would have brought the vehicle home. I mean, if I hit you in your face, you're not going to say "oh, Sebastian, that wasn't nice".

'Sometimes I feel it's all a bit blown up and artificial if we have these questions, trying to make a story out of nothing. "He'd just got out of the vehicle".

Of the collision, he said: "I realised I had to back out, but he continued to come across and that didn't leave me any room". I was just really grateful that my vehicle wasn't broken and I could continue. "I've lost two races now". It made him the first Ferrari driver since compatriot Michael Schumacher in 2004 to win the season's first two races, after the German's victory in Melbourne two weeks ago.

"Hopefully when we go to the next race we'll have a better understanding of the tyres and hopefully put up a better fight with the Ferraris".

When Hamilton was asked about his comments during the mandatory post-race news conference, Vettel intervened.

"There needs to be a certain respect between drivers", Hamilton was quoted as saying on Sky Sports F1.

"It didn't feel that respectful. And obviously he's tending to make quite a few mistakes recently, so it was just unnecessary for him to do that".

Hamilton escaped with no damage from the contact, but Verstappen suffered a broken wheel and puncture, while a differential failure caused his retirement.

"We're going to sit down and discuss it and try to work on the points and improve, and I have no doubt we will".

"Our auto was great so I'm not going to just stay behind him. There was no need to push by".
