  • J&K: One soldier killed, two injured in Kulgam gunfight

A soldier and three civilians were killed as militants clashed with security forces on Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district, triggering violent street protests, officials and witnesses said.

He said that by the time it was chose to blow the house with heavy explosives, one soldier was martyred and three civilians killed.

The encounter in Kulgam today comes days after the Indian forces successfully neutralized a total of 13 Hizbul Mujahideen militants in a spree of encounters conducted on April 1.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the district's Khudwani area last night, following information about presence of militants there.

As per reports said that three soldiers were wounded in an exchange of fire with terrorists and one of them succumbed in the hospital.

The killed civilians have been identified as Sarjeel Ahmad Sheikh (25) of Khudwani village, Faisal Elahi (15) of Melhoora Shopian and Bilal Ahmad Tantrey (16) of Frisal. He was shifted hospital where he succumbed to his injury. As security forces retaliated, two civilians were killed and several others are said to be injured.

However, when the demonstrators, raising slogans, tried to march towards the cordoned off area, security forces and state police personnel deployed in strength immediately swung into action. "But, after searching the entire area, no body of any militant was recovered", they added.

Meanwhile, the authorities have ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in Kulgam district in view of the ongoing encounter and the clashes. Students of Kashmir University also protested against the security forces. "Whether he also died in cross firing is being ascertained", the officer said.
