  • Thousands attend Winnie Mandela’s memorial service

Although Madikizela-Mandela helped usher in a new, more equitable South African political system during her lifetime, she was also entangled in a number of scandals over the years. The embodiment of resilience. "There's no grave big enough to bury her legacy".

But before that he went upstairs to reveal the ring to Madikizela-Mandela first who gave him her blessing.

While Nelson Mandela was in jail for 27 years, she kept his memory alive throughout by protesting and mobilizing activists to fight apartheid.

In the week since her death in a Johannesburg hospital, there has been a surge of support for a woman whose fearlessness and defiance helped bring an end to apartheid but whose public image was tarnished by controversy.

During her old age, she re-emerged as a respected elder who was feted as a living reminder of the late Mandela - and of the long and celebrated struggle against apartheid.

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema is expected to address a memorial service in honour of struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The Soweto Gospel Choir led those gathered in the singing of the national anthem as proceedings began.

The 40‚000-seater stadium‚ which is a stone's throw from Madikizela-Mandela's home in Soweto‚ is expected to packed to capacity and several overflow areas have been prepared. The crowd filled about half of the 40,000-seat stadium.

"I had seen her, I was here in 1974 when she came to the schools and said we were marching out". This is our hero.

Madikizela-Mandela had previously expressed her hurt and disappointment at Archbishop Desmond Tutu who‚ when she appeared before the Truth and Reconciliation Committee in 1997‚ had begged her to apologise for alleged atrocities committed by the Mandela United Football Club.

Mabuza said Winnie Mandela was a special person who loved her country to the extent of sacrificing her own life for the struggle of its freedom.

"Mama Mandela was very methodical".

"I know that women can struggle and fight even when they are exhausted, and the world turns against them, for children that are not their own".

Those years of harassment and stress were not without their toll.

Winnie Mandela, centre left, with ANC leader Nelson Mandela, centre right, leaves the Rand Supreme Court on February, 1991, after an adjournment in her kidnap and assault court case following the death of teenage activist Stompie Seipei. She appealed, had the accessory charge dismissed, and paid a fine.

The charismatic master of ceremonies cried "Long live the fighting spirit of Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela", and "Viva Soweto!" to spirited chanting from the crowd.

In 2003, she was convicted of fraud while serving as an African National Congress lawmaker.

"Was she a sinner or was she a saint?"

Political parties were represented today by Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, leader of the IFP, UDM leader, Ret. Gen. Bantu Holomisa, Leader of the NFP Prof.

"I believe, as (Nelson Mandela) did, that a saint is not somebody who never sinned".

"For those of you who are still trying to drag the name of uMakhulu‚ archbishops and chiefs alike‚ the people are angry‚" Bambatha said.
