Indian boxers continue their sublime run in the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games, five-time world amateur.
Indian boxing queen MC Mary Kom clinched a gold medal in the women's 48-kilogram category at the 21st Commonwealth Games now underway in Gold Coast in Australia, on Saturday. For the win, the five-time world champion outclassed Northern Ireland's Kristina O'Hara 5-0 and was declared the victor after a unanimous decision.
This is India's 20th gold medal at the Games. Australia had won gold at four of the last five Commonwealth Games since Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Mary Kom is the name, and the gold is hers they say! She thrashed Northern Ireland's Kristina O'Hara in the final on Saturday. They will face Australia in Sunday's gold-medal showpiece.
"I have a silver, and a bronze, so I'm just looking for the gold one", said Bester before the final game.
Kom, who has spoken repeatedly at the Games in Australia about the problems facing women and girls in India, said being away for long periods for competition and to train was challenging emotionally. "The team is also disappointed that for all the effort we put, we didn't get the result".
Jamaica were beaten to gold by England in the women's 4x100m, and their men had to settle for third behind South Africa in a race also won by the hosts of the next Games in Birmingham. She bagged a silver medal at the 2008 Asian Women's Boxing Championship in India and a fourth consecutive gold medal at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in China.
The men had seen England's women thrash India 6-0 in their own bronze medal match earlier in the day, but this contest was a much closer affair as Robert Crutchley's side took it 2-1. "I told myself that it is easy but I had to be prepared for everything", she said. "This is the first time I saw them making more defensive errors".
New Zealand beat Canada 74-58 for the bronze. Lake missed at 1.95 m and had two tries at 1.97 but missed both.
