Drinking more alcohol linked to lower life expectancy

  • The recommended alcohol limit in Italy and Spain is almost 50 per cent higher than in the UK

The study in the Lancet medical journal found that people who consumed more than five glasses of wine or beer per week had a greater risk of death from stroke, coronary disease, heart failure, fatal high blood pressure and fatal ruptures of arteries in the chest.

New research suggests alcohol consumption should be limited to less than 10 standard drinks in a week to avoid significant health risks, including premature death, a number much lower than the current recommendation of no more than 14 standard drinks each week.

An worldwide team of researchers looked at data from 600,000 people in 19 countries, who were asked about drinking habits dating back as long ago as 1964.

Those consuming 10-15 drinks a week could expect to lose one to two years of their life, while those consuming 18 or more were likely to die four or five years earlier.

According to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines, a standard drink in the United States is a 12 fl oz. can of regular (5 percent alcohol) beer, a 5 fl oz. glass of 12 percent wine or a 1.5 fl oz. shot of a 40 percent distilled spirit like vodka or whiskey.

Current Irish guidelines recommend a limit of 170g pure alcohol (17 standard drinks) per week for men and 110g pure alcohol (11 standard drinks) for women.

Drinking more alcohol was linked to higher chances of all cardiovascular conditions except heart attacks, where it was linked to a lower chance. Spain and Romania set the upper limit for men at the equivalent of 20 drinks each week, for example.

The new research does not suggest that a drinker who has just a little too much every day is falling off an epidemiological cliff. But we also certainly know the downside to going overboard, as excessive drinking can lead to nasty hangovers and health issues.

"The drinking levels recommended in this study will no doubt be described as implausible and impracticable by the alcohol industry and other opponents of public health warnings on alcohol", wrote Professors Jason Connor and Wayne Hall from the University of Queensland Centre for Youth Substance Abuse Research, Australia.

The authors of the study said recommended alcohol limits should be lowered to around 100g or 12.5 units per week in many countries.

Moderate alcohol consumption also poses health risks, according to a new global study.

Alcohol consumption was found to be associated with a lower risk of non-fatal heart attacks but researchers point out that this must be weighed against increased risk of potentially fatal heart disease.

This news isn't gonna go down well: A group of researchers has studied the drinking habits of 600,000 people to determine, once and for all, the "risk thresholds associated with the lowest risk of mortality".

Participants' alcohol intake was also self-reported so people may have under-reported the amount they drink.

In numerous individual studies included in the meta-analysis, the participants were asked only once about how much alcohol they drank - and people are notoriously bad at accurately reporting their drinking.

A NEW GLOBAL health study of almost 600,000 drinkers has concluded that recommended weekly alcohol consumption should be lower than Ireland's current level.
