Instead, Gmail sends the recipient a dummy email with a hyperlink to the actual self-expiring message, which is what actually disappears when time expires. TechCrunch posted a statement from a Google spokesperson regarding the updates, who said, "We're working on some major updates to Gmail (they're still in draft phase)".
Now, TechCrunch has reported on a new feature in the new Gmail: the ability to send confidential emails that expire.
The new feature will likely be announced alongside Gmail's redesign for the web, which is expected to take place during Google's upcoming I/O developers conference starting May 8. Gmail will let users configure expiration date for expiring mails such as a week, month, multiple years, and more.
TechCrunch states that the feature isn't ready yet, as their source arrived at a non-existent page after clicking on the "Learn more" option to open Google's help articles.
Google has kept in mind all of its users and developed the Confidential Mode in a backward compatible way, which means that users of the earlier version of Gmail will also be able to receive the messages in Confidential Mode via a link. The recipient had to log into their Google account once again to view the content. Alongside the "self-destructing" feature Google will also allow the users to establish two-factor authentications by adding a passcode which will be generated by Google for private messages.
For those of us who can't deal with the onslaught of messages in our inbox but really need to keep in mind to reply to a certain message, Google should be offering some help in the form of a snooze button. This is because Google is now asking users to confirm their Google account to view the confidential email. In 2017, Gmail had 1.2 billion active worldwide users.
The new design changes implemented in Gmail have been awaited by very many people for a long time and, now, they will be implemented to bring an improved user experience. Unless protection is offered against the incredibly simple process of taking a screenshot of any supposedly confidential mail, the whole feature might well be useless, and will simply protect against inbox searches post the expiry of the email.
End-to-end encryption is also not mentioned by Google anywhere.
