Australian authorities confirmed that while hundreds of business were affected by the attack, there was no indication that any information has been compromised at this point. Britain's GCHQ intelligence agency had already warned that Russian Federation was using its cyber capabilities to target democracies.

Britain's National Cyber Security Centre, the US Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a joint statement on the attack, which they said began in 2015 and could have laid the groundwork for further cyber attacks in the future.

"We are pushing back and we're pushing back hard", said Rob Joyce, White House special assistant to the president and cybersecurity director. "Multiple sources including private and public-sector cybersecurity research organizations and allies have reported this activity to the US and United Kingdom governments". They did not identify victims or provide details on the impact of the attacks.

Jeanette Manfra, DHS assistant secretary for cybersecurity, said the alert is a "call for all responsible nations to use their resources - including diplomatic, law enforcement, technical, and other means - to address the Russian cyber threat".

USA and British officials said the infected routers could be used to launch future offensive cyber operations.

"This is yet another example of Russia's disregard for worldwide norms and global order - this time through a campaign of cyber espionage and aggression, which attempts to disrupt governments and de-stabilize business", a British government spokesman said.

USA intelligence agencies previous year accused Russian Federation of interfering in the 2016 election with a hacking and propaganda campaign supporting Donald Trump's campaign for president.

This is just the latest in a serious of escalating confrontations between Western Allies and Russian Federation, with both US President Trump and Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently stating that relations between the superpowers are worse than during the height of the Cold War.

The targets included government and private organizations, including internet service providers, officials said.

"The UK government will continue to work with the United States, other global allies and industry partners to expose Russia's unacceptable cyber behaviour, so they are held accountable for their actions", Ciaran Martin, CEO of the UK's National Cyber Security Centre said.

The US government also has obtained indictments against Iranian hackers, and accused North Korea of being behind the WannaCry computer worm that affected more than 230,000 computers around the world.
