Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the men's race in a time of two hours, four minutes and 16 seconds, while compatriot Vivian Cheruiyot won the women's race in a time of two hours, 18 minutes and 31 seconds.

Despite breaking the British record with a time of 2hr 6min 21sec, Farah voiced his frustration after a freakish incident during the race, which the Daily Mail said was the hottest on record with a temperature of 23.2 deg C.

Farah, 35, struggled with the pace, the heat and mix-ups over water bottles, but still beat Steve Jones' 33-year-old mark with a time of two hours, six minutes and 21 seconds.

Eliud Kipchoge claimed a hat-trick by finishing top of the podium yet again, while Shura Kitata finished runner-up, just ahead of Brit Farah. Find us on Facebook too!

Switzer, who started the women's and World Cup races before running herself, summed up the spirit of the day when she said: "London's always been there for me". I really enjoyed it.

"The guys just went for it, at world record pace".

However, Farah's afternoon did not get off to a good start when he was involved in a freakish incident where he seemed to miss his drinks bottle around the 10-mile mark and had to turn back for it.

It would go on to be the warmest London Marathon on record, with the Met Office posting highs of 23.2C (73.8F) - beating the previous best of 22.7C (72.8F) set in 1996. "They were helpful towards the end but at the beginning someone was trying to take a picture".

Vivian Cheruiyot savours her victory after winning an Olympics gold medal in 5,000m in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil a year ago. But Dibaba was soon reduced to a walking pace to leave Keitany with only her two male pacemakers for company.

The race had been billed as a battle between Keitany and Dibaba, who had been tipped to break Radcliffe's impenetrable record that had stood for 15 years.

"The reason it was so good for me today was because I started slowly". He told the BBC: "I am knackered. I promised a handsome race and it was", he added.

Fresh from her Commonwealth Games triumph, Australia's Madison De Rozario has taken out the women's elite wheelchair event at the London Marathon. The 38-year-old pipped Switzerland's Marcel Hug into second place, with Daniel Romanchuk of the United States third.
