The biggest redesign of Gmail is now live

25 April, 2018, 17:10 | Author: Arnold Gilbert
  • Gmail's getting a major update on desktop and mobile

Unlike its 2012 predecessor, it doesn't tamper much with the service's look and feel. What did surprise me while trying out the new service ahead of today's launch, though, is that some features that didn't get a lot of attention in the leaks, including the new consistent sidebar with its built-in Google Calendar, Tasks and Keep integration, are maybe among the most useful of the additions here.

You can opt into the new Gmail today, and it will become an opt-out change in the coming months.

Aside from the new-look web app and Tasks mobile apps, Google also announced new security features, including Gmail confidential mode, and expanded AI capabilities like smart replies and notification priority settings. Tasks, another current Google tool, is getting a new design both on the web and in its Android/iOS apps, with the ability to drag an email into the Tasks window and create an automatic to-do list.

Disappearing email. The new Condfidential Mode lets you send emails that vanish from the recipient's inbox after a period you specify-sort of like a Snapchat for corporate correspondence-or which you can revoke after you've sent them.

Of course, the first thing you'll notice as soon as you land on the new Gmail is the redesign.

Gmail brings improved features for you, some available right away, others coming in the weeks ahead. Notwithstanding, the choice wasn't accessible for us right now, so the take-off is by all accounts slower than anticipated. There is also a choice for the recipient to receive an SMS message with a passcode generated by Google in order to access the email.

Gmail on the Web gets "Smart Reply", automatically generated email replies, which have been available on mobile since previous year and which now represent 10% of messages, Google says. The update has reportedly been two years in the making, and is targeted at offering users better offline readability of received emails, as well as increasing overall email security.

Another major new addition is "confidential mode". When hovering over an email, the user is able to archive and delete a message, mark it as read, or "snooze" it.

Notifications on mobile will be offered so users can get alerts for important messages, which Google says will help people stay focused without interruption. Existing email standards don't support the idea of retrieving an email once it's landed in someone else's inbox, so Google built its own technology for the goal. With e-mail still being the primary mode of communication for formal purposes along with correspondences of other nature, electronic mail remains indispensable. Gmail will also "nudge" you with reminders to reply to an email in case you may have forgotten about it. Google said that the new experience is available for businesses to start using today in the G Suite Early Adopter Programme, and can be turned on in the admin console. The new offline feature will provide offline access to up to 90 days of emails to the users.
