  • Plans are in place for Paul Heckingbottom's Leeds to spend a week in Myanmar next month

Britain's opposition Labour Party's Shadow Minister for Sport, Rosena Allin-Khan, said on her official Twitter account that she had written to Leeds urging the club to cancel the planned tour.

Well, Leeds have today announced that they are planning a pre-season tour of Myanmar, despite Foreign Office travel warnings being in place for various parts of the country.

However Kyi has since drawn widespread criticism from around the world for her persecution or as United Nations assistant secretary-general for human rights, Andrew Gilmour calls it, "ethnic cleansing", of Rohingya people. I am aware of the serious issues within the country, but I also know that it is a lovely place filled with incredibly warm and welcoming people.

In a statement the club said it will play a Myanmar All-Star IX on May 9 in Yangon, then a game against the national team two days later in Mandalay. I sincerely hope you will reconsider your post-season tour'. We will go to Myanmar to share the famous values and ethos of Leeds United Football Club'.

In a tweet highlighting her letter to Radrizzani, she wrote: "No UK club or organization should promote a country which carries out state sponsored mass murder".

"I also want to be clear that I am active in the Southeast Asia region with ongoing business practices that provide jobs and help to develop the local sports and media sectors".

Kinnear, however, said: "Myanmar is one of the fastest growing nations in South East Asia and is passionate about English football".

'It is imperative that Leeds United is on the right side of history.

More than 70 people were killed in Burma in August past year after attacks on the police and military bases.

Amnesty International have described the actions against the Rohingya Muslims in the northern state of Rahkine as genocide.

The decision to tour Myanmar has sparked security and health fears and raised ethical questions.

Amnesty International agreed, with United Kingdom director Kate Allen calling the decision to travel to Myanmar an "odd choice", and urging the team to use their trip for anti-human rights abuse activism.

Almost 700,000 of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim minority have fled the country since August because of ongoing military operations in Rakhine. "Far too often sporting events have been used as a cheap PR tool to 'sportswash" the stain of a country's human rights record'.

"The Myanmar authorities have continued the brutal crackdown despite a global outcry".
