The Cowboys also traded wide receiver Ryan Switzer, who was a fourth-round selection previous year, for defensive tackle Jihad Ward from the Oakland Raiders.

This was after the Cowboys tried to sign Sammy Watkins early in free agency, well before they made the final decision to move on from Bryant. The trade allowed Dallas to clear $1 million in cap, and Austin will now get $5 million in guarantees with the chance to earn $3 million more in incentives. He was a first-round pick in 2013 out of West Virginia. Let's also not forget that Austin rushed the ball 59 times last season and is averaging 6.7 yards per attempt for his career, so he's more than just a wide receiver and could provide value if he sees more time at running back as well. Anything that improves on his 9.1 career yards per catch is welcome, though.

Are the Dallas Cowboys any closer to replacing Dez Bryant? Dallas will likely use Austin across the middle of the field or in screen plays, although he might be used down the field as well in certain situations.

Austin, drafted eighth overall in 2013, has made 194 catches for 1,689 yards and 12 touchdowns in his five-year National Football League career, but he is not expected to act as a direct replacement for the departed Dez Bryant out wide.

Expect to see the Cowboys end up winning this trade.
