The company's annual F8 conference kicks off Tuesday in San Jose, California, at the McEneryy Convention Center following a year of fake news, privacy scandals, congressional testimony, Russian Federation investigations and apologies.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement at the company's F8 developers conference in San Jose, Calif.

Still in damage-control mode, Zuckerberg announced before Tuesday's keynote that Facebook would make it possible for you to delete information the social network gathers from your activity on other websites and apps.

The 33-year-old CEO also said the dating offer was built from the ground-up with privacy and safety in mind, as he underscored the firm's commitment to boosting privacy protections.

Collins went on to say that Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer, who appeared before the committee yesterday in place of Zuckerberg, "failed to answer fully on almost 40 separate points" but promised to follow up with the answers. Essentially, Facebook said that it plans to get into the dating business. But he added the goal is to put more power into its users' hands to determine what they want to share.

Zuckerberg said such coordinated operations and large numbers of fake accounts was something the company was "slow to recognise".

"Let's not do that again soon", he quipped as the screen showed an image of his hours-long testimony on Capitol Hill last month.

Facebook also made the surprise announcement that its portable VR headset - Oculus Go - would go on sale in the U.S. on Tuesday, priced $199 (£146).

Like an old flame wrecking a first date, Facebook Inc burst in on the matchmaking scene on Tuesday and sent investors in rival apps on a panicked rush for the door.

"The Committee has asked Facebook to respond to each point, and for confirmation of Mark Zuckerberg's attendance before the Committee by the 11th May", its Tuesday morning letter read.

But member of Parliament Damian Collins, who is chair of the digital, culture, media and sport select committee, wrote in a letter to Facebook's United Kingdom head of public policy that Schroepfer's testimony "lacked numerous important details that we need".

Zuckerberg also thanked Jan Koum, the departing co-founder of the Facebook-owned messaging service WhatsApp, who announced his resignation on Monday after the Washington Post published a story that he was leaving the company after clashing with management over privacy, encryption and strategy.

In announcing a new feature, "Watch Party", in which users gather on Facebook to watch videos together, Zuckerberg gave an example - say, watching "your friend testifying before Congress".

"It's something privacy advocates have been asking for - and we will work with them to make sure we get it right", he wrote. Facebook is forging ahead with new promises to protect user privacy even if it means restricting access to developers.
