Cowboys TE Jason Witten Officially Retires & Joins ESPN

  • Jason Witten reportedly offered $4-4.5 million by ESPN, more than twice his NFL max, and another network may be in play

As Jason Witten ponders his future - either of an immediate transition to the television booth or for one more season with the Dallas Cowboys - it appears two scenarios have emerged for the former Volunteers' star.

Witten's receptions rank fourth in National Football League history behind Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice (1,549), tight end Tony Gonzalez (1,325) and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald (1,234). He is third in receiving touchdowns (68) and tied with Hall of Famer Bob Lilly for the franchise mark with 11 Pro Bowl selections.

Witten's greatness isn't just about football.

After 15 years and 239 games played, Witten has nothing left to prove on the field. After getting his helmet knocked off by a hit, Witten stayed on his feet and kept running for almost 30 more yards.

Go here for more on Witten's toughness.

If Witten keeps playing, it will be for love, not money: Dallas Morning News reporter David Moore writes that ESPN's multi-year offer to Witten is in the range of $4-4.5 million a year; were he to remain with the Cowboys, Witten's base salary would be $1.05 million plus a $750,000 roster bonus.

His loss might be felt more in the locker room.

After Cole Beasley muffed a punt in the final minutes of an October 25, 2015 loss in New York, Witten caught up to him walking off the field and put his arm around him as they exited the field to a chorus of hecklers.

However, Aikman, who joined the National Football League on Fox only a few months after his retirement in 2001, says the chance to transition straight into broadcasting is an opportunity that's tough to pass up.

In 2014, Romo said Witten "might be the best Cowboy of all time". Romo responded in the only way a best friend would: "Gonna miss u the most 82".

As he steps away, Witten's legacy with the team is secure. After speaking publicly about growing up with an abusive father, Witten created the SCORE Foundation that's dedicated to, as Witten says, breaking the cycle of family violence. He was the unquestioned leader of the team and a valued voice for Garrett.
