Dust storms tore across northern India killing at least 77 people and injuring 143 as trees and walls were flattened by powerful winds, officials said May 3.

In addition to Agra, the other affected districts were Bijnor, Bareli, Saharanpur, Pilibhit, Firozabad, Chitrakoot, Muzaffarnagar, Rae Bareli and Unnao.

The Taj Mahal is in Agra city but officials said the monument escaped damage.

'We had a high intensity dust storm on 11 April - 19 people died then - but this time it struck during the night so many people sleeping and couldn't get out of their houses when mud walls collapsed, ' Mr Gora said.

In Rajasthan, three districts - Alwar, Dholpur and Bharatpur - were the worst affected.

Forty-three people died there as the wind speed touched 130 kilometres per hour, said Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar of Uttar Pradesh state. The casulty figure was highest in Agra division where at least 36 persons lost life and the toll was expected to rise, said authorities here on Thursday.

Twelve people died in Bharatpur, 10 in Dholpur and five in Alwar, Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Hemant Kumar Gera told PTI.

According to ANI, Kumar said, "Around 40 to 50 people have been killed after a dust storm hit Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday".

"More than 1,000 electricity poles were uprooted in the storm, plunging the city in darkness".

He said that although the rescue team and the rescue team have been forced to serve to clear the debris and restore the electricity supply, they are still waiting for a detailed report on the disaster.

The state government has released funds to compensate the families of those killed or suffered damage.

The Prime Minister also expressed condolence over the loss of lives in the duststorm and wished the injured speedy recovery.

Major destruction was reported from Alwar where more than 100 trees were uprooted and fell on stationary vehicles and electric lines.

Uttar Pradesh's regional Met office also warned of a second spell of dust storm in many districts of Uttar Pradesh, following which an alert has been sounded by the government.
