  • Suicide bombers attacked Libya's elections commission in the capital Tripoli on Wednesday

Libya's interim government says a group of gunmen stormed the building in the capital, Tripoli, on Wednesday.

The BBC reports Wednesday's attack was the deadliest the country has seen in years.

Speaking anonymously due to restrictions on talking to media, the same source said that several commission employees and security personnel had been killed in the attack.

Law enforcement officers eliminated two of the attackers.

The United Nations, as well as several regional and worldwide powers, seeks for Libya to accomplish its rare presidential and parliamentary elections that have been banned during Gaddafi's 42-year rule.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in Tripoli.

US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert condemned the attack in a statement and said the US is committed to working with the Government of National Accord to deny IS "safe haven in their country". The commission recently registered almost one million new voters.

Libya has been in a state of turmoil since the 2011 civil war that saw the ouster of longstanding ruler Moammar Gadhafi by rebel fighters backed by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation airstrikes.

The attack in the capital Tripoli is the worst in years and reflects the challenges security forces face in rooting out militants who seized footholds in Libya amid the chaos that followed the 2011 ouster of Muammar Gaddafi. A 2015 UN-backed deal to set up the GNA in Tripoli failed to end the turmoil, as divisions continue with a rival administration in the east.

In February this year, United Nations special envoy Ghassan Salame said that he was aiming for parliamentary and presidential elections in the North African country by the end of 2018.
