The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its election ally the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) have jointly applied to the Supreme Election Board (YSK) for the nomination of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the upcoming snap presidential elections, Hurriyet Daily News reports.

"Some people may look for their presidential candidates by microscope, but we have already decided on our candidate".

On May 4, the Republican People's Party (CHP) nominated Muharrem İnce to challenge Erdoğan in the June 24 presidential election.

The secularist CHP, which is the main opposition party, has never won an election against Erdogan in his decade and a half in power.

Since the abortive putsch, authorities have carried out a sweeping crackdown on alleged supporters of the US -based preacher Fethullah Gülen, whom Ankara blames for the coup attempt, detaining 160,000 people and dismissing almost the same number of civil servants, the United Nations said in March.

Three parties in the bloc are fielding their own candidates for the presidential election.

Earlier this year, the AKP and MHP agreed to run together in the parliamentary and presidential elections, which had been scheduled for November 2019.

Party leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu has said he would not run for president.

Ince stated that he would take the country back to the parliamentary system if he gets elected as president.
