Mets' Matt Harvey Designated For Assignment After Refusing Minor League Stint

The Mets are finally ready to cut ties with former ace Matt Harvey, who crashed and burned in 2018, failing as both a starter and reliever.

Harvey ended up pitching a career-high 189 1/3 innings in the regular season before spinning another 26 2/3 in the postseason - at least one too many, as it turned out. The decision was made after Harvey declined to accept a minor-league assignment - as he has the ability to do given his MLB service time. "He was appreciated for what he brought to the New York Mets".

"I try not to let emotion interfere with decision making, but empathy is part of making decisions", Alderson said.

Once a highly-touted prospect, Harvey broke out in 2013, with a 2.27 ERA and 191 strikeouts over 178 innings.

Asked earlier this week about reports that Harvey had been partying in Los Angeles the night before a start in San Diego, Alderson simply remarked that he wasn't surprised in the slightest. "I like Matt, in spite of all the stuff that's gone on and certainly because of a lot of the stuff that's gone on".

Hansel Robles has been activated for tonight's game as the corresponding move for Matt Harvey being designated for assignment. "We're going to miss him". He'll end his Mets career with a 34-37 record and 3.66 ERA across 104 starts. After a fantastic debut for the team, Harvey underwent Tommy John surgery and returned stronger than ever in 2015, leading the team to a World Series. He goes down as one of baseball's best pure hitters - often compared to Pete Rose - and will be the first Japanese player voted into the Hall of Fame. He relieved Jason Vargas with NY trailing 6-0 in the fifth inning and gave up Ozzie Albies' three-run homer in a five-run seventh. Perhaps nobody in the organization's 57 seasons has embodied the full Kübler-Ross model of what it means to be a Met - to promise, to fulfill, to frustrate and, ultimately, to disappoint - quite like Harvey.

NY had hoped Harvey would be willing to work at the team's minor league complex in Florida in an effort to regain form. He was moved to the bullpen after surrendering six runs in an April 19 start against the Braves, but never found a rhythm in a relief role, allowing seven runs in four appearances.
