After a tiresome stage through the desert, the final 5km saw the touch paper lit with a brutally fast pace set by Quick-Step Floors into the sprint finish.

Rohan Dennis retains the overall leader's pink jersey while Barbin retains the blue jersey after he was second-fastest to reach the summit of this stage's Cat 4 climb.

Elia Viviani won the second stage of the Giro d'Italia, nudging past Italian countryman Jakub Mareczko in a bunch sprint finish on Saturday.

"The pressure was off after yesterday's win", Viviani said.

"The team rode for me in the 30km before the intermediate sprint and delivered me perfectly", said Dennis, who beat Viviani in that race within the race.

"But I felt better later and I knew that I was the favourite at the finish".

But having been left out of the Sky team to ride the Giro previous year, Viviani wasn't going to let lightning strike twice.

Ryan Mullen and Nicolas Roche both finished in the peloton in the same time as the stage victor.

He claimed three bonus seconds in an intermediate sprint after superb work by his team-mates to overcome his two-second deficit from Friday's opening time trial in Jerusalem, where he was second to Dumoulin.

The 2018 Giro d'Italia concludes on Sunday, May 27, in Rome after three weeks of racing.

With a rest day tomorrow, the race now moves to Italy in stage four on Tuesday, consisting of a 198km route from Catania to Caltagirone.

Adams hoped the Giro's start in Israel will help grow the sport of cycling locally as well as show Israel to millions of people around the world. Some riders lost contact as it was not an easy stage. About 40km or 50km from the sprint, they asked me if I wanted to do and I said not really but we did it anyway and I thought that I can't not put 100% into it. "It's a great moment for Israel and Israeli sports", Netanyahu stated.

"I've been nicely surprised with Israel: when we race outside of Europe, Australia or the U.S., it's pretty quiet on the roads".

The Israel Cycling Academy squad was making its maiden Grand Tour appearance and enjoyed the sight of one of its riders, Canadian Guillaume Boivin, leading for much of the stage before he was passed by the sprinters in the windy descent into Eilat.

At the conclusion of the Sunday stage, almost 1,000 people and three cargo planes will leave Israel and continue on to the next leg of the race in Sicily. "This was a Giro d'Israel - a three-day tour around our special country".
