  • Mumbai Indians chose to bowl against Kings XI Punjab as they looked to stay alive in the IPL 2018 tournament

Mumbai Indians (MI) were in a precarious situation when they took the field on Sunday against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), needing to win all their remaining games to stay in playoff contention in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018.

With this win, Mumbai Indians climb up to the fifth position in the Points Table with four wins. He bowled the crucial 18th over when Kolkata needed 43 runs from 18 balls and skipper Karthik and pinch-hitter Sunil Narine were at the crease. Contrary to popular belief, the Rohit Sharma lead side went onto win their match after restricting KKR to 168.

Put in to bat, the hosts were off to a decent start as openers Suryakumar Yadav (59 off 39 balls) and Evin Lewis (43 off 28 deliveries) took Mumbai past the 50-run mark in 5.2 overs.

They hit seven fours and three sixes in the first six overs.

Mumbai Indians all-rounder Krunal Pandya is likely to be rewarded for his consistent performances with a maiden national call-up, according to The Times of India.

Mumbai Indians opening batsmen Suryakumar Yadav and Lewis had set the tone for their team scoring 91 runs in 9.2 overs. But as the two were poised for a big score, Andre Russell broke their stand removing Lewis, who was caught by Chris Lynn, in the 10th over. Hardik Pandya became MI's savior with the ball as well- with figures of 2/19 in four overs.

When Knight Riders required 37 runs to overhaul Mumbai Indians' 181 for four, visiting captain Dinesh Karthik had to repeat his heroics in the Nidahas Trophy final in March. During the match, Markande and Pandya both ascended to the top of the wicket-taker leaderboard with 13 and 14 scalps apiece. "With 14 wickets, Hardik Pandya is the Purple Cap holder now". Even as KKR revived their chase through Robin Uthappa and Nitish Rana, Hardik returned to bounce Rana out on the hook.

For Mumbai, Hardik picked up two wickets for 19 runs while McClenaghan, Bumrah, Krunal and Markande bagged a wicket each.

Uthappa's wicket was followed by Rana's a wicket and MI started to pull things back with the departure of two settled batsmen.

Top scorer Jos Buttler (51) was outfoxed with a carrom ball and was caught behind before Mujeeb clean bowled Jofra Archer with a flawless googly off the next ball as Rajasthan lost its last six wickets for 52 runs.
