  • Google I/O Update: Google Maps 'For You' Section, Augmented Reality Features Announced

Subscriptions to premium news outlets can now easily be done through Google News, without the need of manually putting in credit card and other information by the end-user, if so desired. Perhaps that will lead to your group discovering a new place that you may enjoy together.

For starters, there's a new Explore tab that will recommend places to eat or have fun at around an area you search for in the app. Google is also making recommending places that fit your tastes better thanks to "matches" that give a food or drink venue a number rating based on what Maps has learned about you such as your likes and dislikes.

Google is updating Maps with a couple of new features that it hopes will encourage users to get out of the house and try new things. It uses machine learning to produce the match score in combination with reviews on hundreds of millions of places left by human visitors. They're using two ways to do this, including expanding their VIsual Positioning System (VPS) technology they launched with Project Tango, bringing it to all devices and a new Augmented Reality view using your camera.

A shortlist feature aims to make it easier to select places to eat or hang out and have your friends vote on their choice, which will hopefully eliminate a lot of the back-and-forth now going on in your messaging app. Instead you'll get curated lists of what's good based on the area or neighborhood you're looking up.

Google Maps is getting several new updates at the company's Google I/O 2018 annual developer conference. The app which is actually meant for giving directions to its users, now, has an added responsibility to assist them in discovering the needed places like restaurants, malls, theatres etc. A new camera interface can tell users exactly where they are in the real world, with helpful animated guides. The new features will be rolling out over the next few months. VPS will help Maps to figure out where you are, what direction you're now pointed in and then help you get where you need to go.
