Planner, Tortured by CIA, Asks to Tell Senators About Gina Haspel

  • President Donald Trump touted Haspel's nomination on Twitter

"My highly respected nominee for CIA Director, Gina Haspel, has come under fire because she was too tough on Terrorists".

Jon Tester said Tuesday he is not voting for Gina Haspel's nomination to be the next Central Intelligence Agency director, the first Democrat from a red state to openly oppose her. Think of that, in these very risky times, we have the most qualified person, a woman, who Democrats want OUT because she is too tough on terror.

White House aides on Friday sought out additional details about Haspel's involvement in the CIA's now-defunct program of detaining and interrogating terror suspects after 9/11 as they prepared her for Wednesday's confirmation hearing. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

But Haspel's opponents, including human rights groups and some former military and intelligence officials, say the Central Intelligence Agency hasn't fully disclosed her role in "enhanced interrogation" programs after the September 11 attacks.

In a bid to boost her standing ahead of the Senate confirmation hearings, Trump sent out a tweet that celebrated rather than downplayed Haspel's role in the "enhanced interrogation" programme that included waterboarding - the simulated drowning of detainees.

Perhaps what really irks Democrats about Haspel's appointment is that she reminds them of what they were weak on during the Bush years: opposing Bush's overseas adventures, and attacking his many legal justifications for an inhumane practice that doesn't even yield good intelligence.

Daniels is embroiled in several lawsuits with President Trump after being paid hush money by Trump's attorney, Michael Cohen, to stay silent about an alleged affair she had with Trump in 2011.

"She is very qualified, she has risen up the ranks", he said.

Trump nominated Haspel, who would be the first woman to lead the intelligence agency, to succeed Mike Pompeo, who has become secretary of state.

Yet there is something naïve about the Democrats' opposition to Haspel.

One of the leaders of the Women's March movement, Tamika Mallory, blamed US President Donald Trump's proposal to ban.

In 2002, Haspel oversaw a secret agency prison in Thailand, where the New York Times reported that an al-Qaida suspect, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, was waterboarded three times.

Haspel, one official said, was wary of suffering the same fate as failed veterans affairs nominee Ronny Jackson and of dredging up the CIA's troubled past.

Following the publishing of the Post report, Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah echoed Sanders' praise of Haspel. Some lawmakers have read the 6,000-page still-classified report on the detention and interrogation program that the Senate intelligence committee issued in 2014.

Using extreme interrogation techniques to pry information from detainees now is against the law, but some lawmakers worry that Trump will try to reinstate it and will get Haspel to go along.
