Iran attacks Israel with rockets after deal torn up

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the Iranian rockets either fell short of their targets - military bases in the Golan - or were intercepted.

A spokesman for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said earlier the Iranian Quds forces had fired at least 20 missiles at Israel's forward positions on the Golan Heights shortly after midnight on Thursday.

"We stand with Israel in the fight against Iran's malign activities". Pro-Syrian media said Syrian missiles then fired at Israeli forces. Tehran has issued several threats over the past month, saying that it would hurt Israel in response to a slew of attacks that were ascribed to the Israeli air force. The IDF said several of the rockets were intercepted by Israel's missile defense system, the Iron Dome.

Iran has vowed to retaliate to recent Israeli strikes in Syria targeting Iranian outposts, including an attack last month on Syria's T4 air base in Homs province that killed seven Iranian military personnel.

Incoming rocket sirens were activated early Thursday morning in Israel's northern Golan Heights communities of Majdal Shams, Neve Ativ, Nimrod, Masa'ade, Buqa'ata, Odem, and El Rom.

A commander in the regional alliance supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told Reuters that Israel's air force had struck an army base at Kisweh without causing casualties. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said aircraft flew over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, adjacent to Quneitra.

Israel has neither confirmed nor denied most of the airstrikes. The confrontation came two days after the United States announced its withdrawal, with Israel's urging, from a nuclear accord with Iran.

"We hit. nearly all of the Iranian infrastructure in Syria", Lieberman said at the annual Herzliya security conference near Tel Aviv.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveled to Moscow on Wednesday to meet with President Vladimir Putin and discuss military coordination amid new strikes in Syria blamed on Israel.

Russia, generally friendly to Israel but fighting in Syria's civil war on the same side as Iran, called on both to show restraint and resolve differences through diplomatic means. "We strongly support Israel's sovereign right to defend itself", he said.

On Tuesday night the military instructed local governments to open bomb shelters to residents of the Golan Heights following the identification of "abnormal movements of Iranian forces in Syria". Israel has warned that it will not allow Iran to establish a permanent military presence in Syria. After an uneventful night, the military on Wednesday called on residents to return to "full civilian routine", meaning studies and excursions would continue as usual, although the shelters would remain open.

According to the Observatory 15 people were killed, among them eight Iranian fighters. "It means we are on a collision course".
