  • Activists Take To Twitter As Teenager Is Sentenced To Death For Killing Unwanted Husband

19-year-old Noor Hussein was married at age 15, but soon after the ceremony ran away from her husband for three years and was hiding in the house of a relative. A social media campaign - #JusticeForNoura - has gained widespread attention. She was tricked into returning by her father, who handed her over to her husband's family.

Rights groups are pushing for her pardon with an activist from the Afrika Youth Movement, Badr Eldin Salah telling Reuters that "Noura's lawyers say they plan to appeal against the decision, but we also need strong global support from organisations such as the African Union, the United Nations and the European Union to support her". Thousands of people have shared a change.org petition.

She kept refusing her husband's attempt to have sex with her and after six days, he got his cousins to hold her down as he raped her.

For the first time in the history of the Sudan the public came to the protection of women sentenced to death for the murder of her husband, the Washington Post reported.

The following day, he attempted to rape her again and as she struggled to stop him, she stabbed him, killing him.

"One held her chest and head, the others held her legs".

Her legal team has at least 15 days to appeal the judgement. He added that Hussein was abandoned not only by the law, but also by her family. "Marital rape happens in Sudan often and people don't talk about it", he said. A group of Sudanese and global activists have been visiting Hussein in prison, translating letters of support from across the globe and working with her lawyers to appeal the case. But Hussein's case was different. Sudan is one of the many African countries where marital rape is not considered a crime.

"The Sudanese authorities must abolish this grossly unfair sentence and to ensure that Nura was given a fair re-trial, which takes account of her mitigating circumstances", - said human rights activists.

"The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment and to apply it to a victim only highlights the failure of the Sudanese authorities to acknowledge the violence she endured", Magango said.
