104 year old Australian Scientist David Goodall ends his Life

  • Precious time Dr Goodall speaks to his grandchildren and their partners about some of the plants displayed in the gardens

A 104-year-old Australian scientist identified as David Goodall has ended his life in Switzerland over deteriorating life.

The scientist had traveled from Perth, Australia (where it is against the law to end one's life) to Switzerland to carry out the procedure.

Assisted suicide was supposed to be meant for people who have lethal medical conditions or are in significant pain but Goodall's case is another example of how healthy people are killing themselves.

A noted ecologist and botanist, 104-year-old David Goodall reportedly took his final breaths as the song he chose, Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", came to a close.

He spent his final full day exploring the botanic gardens with three of his grandchildren, who said they were proud of his bravery in the face of great public attention and were glad he would die on his own terms.

Accompanied by Exit International founder Philip Nitschke, Goodall stopped in Bordeaux, France, to see family before continuing his journey to Basel on Monday. They were taken from the "Ode to Joy", a poem written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 and revised in 1803, with additions made by the composer.

"One should be free to choose death, when death is at an appropriate time", Goodall told reporters at a Wednesday press conference, according to The Sun.

Currently, most legislation that allows for assisted suicide or euthanasia does so only in the cases of terminally ill patients.

Sky's Michelle Clifford said police and coroner officials would now need to visit the clinic to make sure the assisted suicide was carried out properly.

Some of the instruments used to end Dr Goodall's life at the Life Cycle clinic in Switzerland.

He cited a lack of mobility, doctor's restrictions and an Australian law prohibiting him from taking his own life among his complaints, but he was not ill.

Goodall, a 20-year member of Exit International, was born in London in 1914 and moved to Australia in 1948, where he was a lecturer at the University of Melbourne.

"What is the age at which we no longer celebrate people continuing life?"

Assisted suicide is illegal in most countries and was banned in Australia until the state of Victoria became the first to legalise the practice previous year.

He wanted his body to be donated to science or for his ashes to be sprinkled.

The centenarian retained his sense of humor up to the very end and even wore a top inscribed with the words "Ageing Disgracefully" during his meeting with the press on Tuesday.
