Pakistan 193-6 at tea as Ireland starts life in test cricket

  • The match against Pakistan at Malahide had to be abandoned

Rankin, the 15th man ever, and the first since Kepler Wessels (Australia and South Africa) 25 years ago, to play Test cricket for two nations after making a lone appearance for England in 2014, had an uncertain Azhar Ali (four) edging to Porterfield at second slip.

An unbeaten century partnership between newcomer Faheem Ashraf and Shadab Khan switched the momentum to Pakistan after Ireland made a credible start to its inaugural cricket test on Saturday.

But Shadab Khan (52 not out) and Faheem Ashraf (61no) excelled before play stopped again to put a dampener on another soggy day for Ireland.

Pace bowlers Tim Murtagh, Boyd Rankin and Stuart Thompson all took two wickets apiece.

Despite being the first team to lose their entire opening day of Test match cricket, Deutrom refused to be deflated.

Diving to make his crease as Tyrone Kane tried to throw down the stumps, Imam - nephew of Pakistan great Inzamam - collided with the onrushing wicketkeeper Niall O'Brien.

But the 22-year-old left-hander, who hit a hundred on his one-day global debut against Sri Lanka last year, has made fifties against both Kent and Northamptonshire in Pakistan's two warm-up matches ahead of this one-off Test.

Ireland has had a wet welcome to Test cricket with the opening day of their inaugural one-off match against Pakistan completely wiped out by bad weather.

Ireland's seam-dominated attack, led brilliantly by Tim Murtagh (two for 33 in 17 overs), had enjoyed moments of success throughout the day, but seemed to have run out of ideas as they awaited the new ball.

After a few near run-outs, Pakistan's third-wicket duo settled in - Shafiq square-cut Kane for four, with left-hander Haris Sohail glancing Stuart Thompson for a legside boundary.

Shafiq is the class act of this Pakistan batting line-up and he moved past his half-century and had moved on to 62 before he played a poor pull shot to a short ball from Rankin, with Andrew Balbirnie taking the catch at square leg to leave Pakistan on 153 for five.

Pakistan reached lunch on 2-67 on Saturday after Ireland had a first ball in Test cricket to remember in Dublin.

Pakistan team is in good form as it won the tour match against Northamptonshire with 9 wickets.

Babar Azam (14), pushing hard at a Murtagh delivery that left him off the pitch, was well-held by Paul Stirling at second slip. Captain Sarfraz Ahmed (20) soon bowed out, too.
