Trump unloads on DHS chief over immigration

  • Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen testifies during a hearing held by the Senate Judiciary Committee

Kelly told Fox News Friday that after Thursday's cabinet meeting, he phoned Nielsen to implore her not to quit. "How is this still happening?" he said, questioned her intensely about the rise in border crossings. At the meeting, both Nielsen and Attorney General Jeff Sessions tried in vain to explain to Donald Trump that the federal government can not completely shut down the border.

A report from the New York Times claimed that Nielsen even wrote a letter of resignation after the outburst, but has not submitted it.

"The @nytimes article alleging that the Secretary drafted a resignation letter yesterday and was close to resigning is false", tweeted Homeland Security spokesman Tyler Houlton.

In a statement, Nielsen said she meant to "continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the president's security-focused agenda".

The Trump administration, under U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, has moved to revoke this special status and to expel tens of thousands of protected immigrants. "I share his frustration", Nielsen said in a statement.

A caravan of Central American migrants traveling through Mexico seized the president's attention this spring, and in the weeks that followed he frequently asked Homeland Security for updates, administration officials said.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, left, speaks with senior White House adviser Jared Kushner at an event where Melania Trump spoke in the Rose Garden of the White House, May 7, 2018.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, "The President is committed to fixing our broken immigration system and our porous borders".

"Honduras, Mexico and many other countries that the U.S.is very generous to, sends many of their people to our country through our WEAK IMMIGRATION POLICIES".

Trump has also been frustrated with Nielsen, according to people familiar with the dynamic.

Trump's anger about immigration has grown in recent weeks, according to several officials.

During a rally in Elkhart, Indiana, Thursday evening, Trump complained, "We have the worst immigration laws in the history of mankind". "Give me some reinforcements, please", he urged the crowd, referring to Republicans in Congress who have balked at the billions of dollars he has requested for border security.

While border apprehensions dipped past year to their lowest levels ever, the numbers have been ticking up in recent months, returning to more typical historical levels.

Trump, she told the Times, is "rightly frustrated that existing loopholes and the lack of congressional action have prevented this administration from fully securing the border". Another person said the president was primarily focused on the Homeland Security Department because he viewed Nielsen as primarily responsible for keeping unauthorized people out of the country. More recently, however, those numbers have climbed back toward the level they were in the final years of the Obama administration-an intolerable equivalence for Trump.
