At least eight people have been killed in a vehicle bomb explosion near a provincial government building in Afghanistan's eastern province of Nangarhar.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack on a government building in Afghanistan on Sunday, the group's Amaq news agency said without providing any evidence.

A spokesman for the Nangarhar hospital, Inamullah Miakhial also confirmed later that nine people were killed in the attack, including a child and over 36 others were injured.

"Security forces are in the area chasing and fighting them", he said.

But the Islamic State group has also stepped up their attacks in recent months, particularly in Kabul.

A public office in eastern Afghanistan came under an armed attack on Sunday, officials said.

Earlier, he said there had been two explosions.

According to Khogyani, at least six ten people, including civilians, workers of the Customs Department, and security personnel lost their lives in the attack.

"I saw two rickshaw drivers on the ground with their arms blown off", said Khan Mohammad, a local resident who saw the initial blasts and the start of the gun battle.

April saw a series of attacks across the country targeting voter registration centres as Afghanistan gears up for long-delayed legislative elections due in October.

A year ago the United States increased its support to struggling Afghan forces, announcing plans for thousands of additional advisers and more air strikes in an effort to force the Taliban to enter peace negotiations.
