Pakistani authorities have barred a US diplomat involved in a fatal traffic accident from leaving the country, forcing an American military aircraft flown in for his departure to leave without him, local media reported on Saturday.
Tensions between the USA and Pakistan have been rising over the fatal accident, which infuriated many Pakistanis and has resulted in the two countries restricting the movement of each other's remaining diplomats, Reuters reported.
It also ordered the government to decide about adding his name to the Exit Control List, which controls the movement of people wanted by courts or those involved in corruption.
Sources said that the USA diplomat wasn't present at the airbase but would reach there after being allowed to leave the country.
Col Hall had escaped arrest because of diplomatic immunity but a first information report (FIR) regarding the incident was registered with Kohsar Police Station.
The airfield incident occurred a day after the USA and Pakistani governments imposed curbs on movements of each other's diplomats.
'This is a development that could well develop into a full-blown crisis for relations if it's not resolved soon, ' said South Asia expert at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington Michael Kugelman. Washington later suspended its security assistance to Pakistan. Hall was not granted permission to leave, according to Dawn, and he later returned to the US Embassy in Islamabad.
The father of man killed in the accident, Idris Baig, said in a recent interview that Col. Hall must face justice in Pakistan and was satisfied to see the authorities had not let him leave the country.
