  • Data Leak Scandal: Facebook Blocked 200 Apps For Data Misuse

The UK Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee has been investigating allegations of misuse of user data surrounding Facebook's recent scandal relating to data analysis firm Cambridge Analytica.

Facebook blocked around 200 apps for interfering with user's privacy and misusing their data.

The company also released confidential agreements signed with Cambridge academic Aleksandr Kogan and whistle-blower Christopher Wylie, requiring the deletion of Facebook users' data gathered by Dr Kogan's company GSR. A Cambridge Analytica spokesperson said the company used Twitter for political advertising but insisted that it had never "undertaken a project with GSR focusing on Twitter data and Cambridge Analytica has never received Twitter data from GSR".

Facebook is suspending about 200 apps it believes may have misused data.

Facebook says it's now investigating the app, and if myPersonality refuses to cooperate or fails the audit, the company will ban it.

"And second, where we have concerns, we will conduct interviews, make requests for information (RFI) - which ask a series of detailed questions about the app and the data it has access to - and perform audits that may include on-site inspections", Ime Archibong, Vice President of Product Partnerships at Facebook, said in a blog post.

Facebook has now suspended the myPersonality app (and around 200 other similar apps) in its efforts to investigate apps that may have violated its data privacy policies.

The biz also failed to say how many people had been added to the app review team since 2014, but reiterated plans to double the number of people who work on safety issues overall - from 10,000 to 20,000 - this year. Where we find evidence that these or other apps did misuse data, we will ban them and notify people via this website.

The company basically admitted that more blunders probably took place (as did Kogan and former Cambridge Analytica staffer Brittany Kaiser). What will the final count be? Facebook closed that loophole in 2014, but clearly wants to avoid another data privacy scandal.

Facebook has so far refused to name the suspect apps.

On Reddit, readers are condemning IBM for sending more than 100 executives to Capitol Hill this week in an effort to prevent US policy makers from copying GDPR, Europe's new privacy standards, which give citizens the right to access their personal data and learn how it's being used, prevents companies from processing personal data unless users give explicit consent, and requires them to adopt privacy by design principles, among other restrictions.

The compromised data was said to be highly sensitive and reveals personal information of Facebook users like the results of their psychological tests.
