  • Four attackers were killed in an assault against police in Indonesia

Metro TV reported that after the white minivan crashed into the entrance gate, three men armed with swords jumped out and started attacking several police officers.

Local police initially said they had killed three people and wounded another.

One of the dead men had a suspected bomb strapped to his body, the report said. Police updates have stated that there were five attackers, and that four were shot dead at the scene.

It is said to be the deadliest since the 2002 Bali attack.

No group has taken responsibility so far.

He said the men had driven their vehicle into the police yard before getting out to stage the attack.

The attack comes as the Southeast Asian nation has been rocked by a series of deadly attacks on churches and a police station, involving multiple suicide bombings carried out by families, including young children. Both groups have pledged allegiance to IS, they said.

All six bombers were killed, including the mother who was Indonesia's first known female suicide bomber.

The militants also rampantly shot at the headquarters, according to national police spokesman Senior Commissioner Muhammad Iqbal.

"They had the same teacher and they regularly met for Koran recital every week", said East Java police chief Machfud Arifin, adding that police were pursuing the teacher for questioning.

Police have said the church and earlier police station attacks were motivated by the arrest of JAD leaders, including jailed radical Aman Abdurrahman.

Police suspect they were carried out by a cell of the Islamic State-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), an umbrella organization on a U.S. State Department terrorist list that is reckoned to have drawn hundreds of Indonesian sympathizers of Islamic State.
